Spanish/English second languages.

I've been looking around, and I just wonder how many people here teach English as a second language to Spanish speaking students? I've been doing it for three years now, and I love my job because I don't have to leave my hometown or state to do it.

Teaching English to Spanish speakers

Well, I'm studying and working in Peru at the moment and loving it. I'm very privileged to be able to work in a remote community helping those in need. Most of my students are very poor and no real grasp of English.

Teaching them has to be one of the most satisfying jobs I've ever done. There are quite a few sites out there for resources for teaching Spanish speaking students.

Two that comes to mind are:

Activities to help Spanish speaking students learn English
Learn Spanish

It would be cool to be able to teach people in other countries, but there are a lot of them right here in the US, around where I live, that need help. So I stay right where I am and help them while still remaining in a familiar environment. But thanks for the sites. I will check them out.

Re: Spanish/English second languages.

I was a Spanish teacher for many years with elementary and community college students. I taught ESL to adults at a community college for 1.5 years. Currently, I have my Spanish license and want an ESL add-on. I have passed the Praxis II ESL test for NC. I want to teach adults at the community college level (for now). I am open to new experiences, but prefer teaching those who need English in the US. They're already here and ready to learn. Oh, I have made visits to Mexico, Honduras, and Venezuela. I guess wanting to stay in the US is the exception. Good to be on this forum.

Re: Spanish/English second languages.

I recommend skits as a good way of teaching English to most spanish speaking students as it focuses on initial and final consonant sounds and students overcome ther fear of speaking and gain self confidence in speaking English with expressions.

Re: Spanish/English second languages.

I don't currently teach English to Spanish speaking students, but I too would like to give it a try locally. Ideally though, I'd like to go to Mexico to do this, though Leslie's Peru sounds like a nice alternative.

Bustour,
Remember that there are many native Spanish speakers already in the US. We have Mexicans, Salvadorans, Hondurans, etc. You don't have to go abroad (unless that's your desire of course). You may want to teach Native Hispanics in their culture and that's your prerogative. Best wishes in your endeavours.

Re: Teaching English to Spanish speakers

How wonderful Leslie. My preference is to teach English in South America if I can manage to find something eventually (I have to complete the ESL course first). Mind if I pick your brain? How did you find your position? What qualifications did you acquire? What is the pay like? I have heard that it's not as great in South America as in other countries. Do you find it safe?

Would love to hear from you.

Thanks

Re: Teaching English to Spanish speakers

It's not all so easy to find teaching jobs in South America. If there are no jobs being advertised at the time, then you may want to consider going thru an agent that does volunteer programs. These are usually a good entry or contact point.

Click on Advanced Search in the above menu area, and enter "South America" as the keyword and select the Teaching Jobs Worldwide forum. You will be surprised at the contacts that come up. The jobs listed will also show pay rates too in most cases.

I would suggest that you will have to pay a big finder's fee to any agency that assists you with this - at home rates of currency.
It's really not necessary, and much more reliable to do the legwork yourself, looking at recommendations.

If you look in the teaching jobs worldwide section, we're advertising jobs teaching english to spanish speakers at my institute in a remote area of north eastern peru right now, without having to be fleeced by an agency en route. Any reliable institution can point you in the right direction to complement your job with a little volunteering to help the communities you are living in, too.
