Is it possible to break your contract??

Hey,

This forum rocks.... It's helped me no end since I've started teaching, great advice and ideas.

I was wondering, is it possible to break my contract? I hate the school and the city I am teaching in at the moment, the contract I signed has clauses about fines and penalties for breaking my contract. Can I just walk away and go get a teaching position in another city? Or will the fact I walked away end up biting me in the arse at a later point?

Your advice and help would be really appreciated.

Re: Is it possible to break your contract??

Contracts contracts contracts ... they are only designed to intimidate and scare you. If a school really wants to screw with you, they can and wont honour their contract with you and you have no leg to stand on. Contracts really aren't worth the paper they are written on, and it is merely a gentlemans contract then anything else. Don't be scared if you leave and it bites you back on the arse later. Because it wont! Schools have very little power to enforce the rules of a contract on you and why would they? There is very little benefit for them to pursue you when you have few funds and can easily leave the country at will.

At the end of the day, do what's best for you. Forget what a contract says. I have seen too many times where employers don't honour their contract, and so goes for the teacher.

As I said before, they really aren't worth the paper they are written on. Trust me... I'm a vetaran of 8 years teaching abroad.

Thanks mate. I thought that maybe the case, but I feel a lot happier to actually hear it from someone.

Contracts are more of a "feel good" thing for employers and teachers. You should always have an escape route or backup JUST IN CASE.

Cool post Cool ice, and hi Margy. Yeah, effin contracts! I've said it before, and I'll say it again...if wasn't for the slight possibility of getting papercuts, I'd wipe my a** with the damn things....

If you want to get out of your contract, just leave, but get a new job first! You can always get a new visa etc in Hong Kong, it's not hard, fairly cheap and takes only 1 morning...depending on where you are in the queue.

Good luck!
Few more cents worth folks,
