Question New Timer

I just graduated from university and I'm looking at Teaching English overseas....well obviously since I'm here. Anywho. Is there anything that I should look out for? And is there anything that I should make sure i figure out before I go, for example health insurance....and where do I find this information?

Lightbulb News timers teaching overseas

Hello Anne-Marie and welcome

Well, there's not much to worry about when teaching overseas. It's quite straight forward... well probably because I've been overseas for a long time now.

Things to keep in mind are:
  • Vaccines. Not really required for developed countries as Korea, Japan, Taiwan etc. But speak to your doctor if considering to teach in Thailand, Vietnam etc.
  • Visas: Checkout the countries visa requirements online. Make sure you don't teach illegally otherwise you can be deported.
  • Get a TEFL qualification if you have time. Opens more doors for you.
  • Be careful of some schoool and recruiters that promise the world. Always ask to speak or email to a current or past teacher.
  • Have a backup plan if the above point falls thru.
  • Be aware of the culture shock you will probably encounter.
  • You will most probably be enrolled in the countries national health insurance program. I would also suggest buying your airline ticket on a gold credit card if you have one. That way you also get complimentary travel insurance.

If you have any specific questions, please do let me know and I will try and point you in the right direction.

Good luck.
