Important decisions, please help

Hi everyone, i was hoping someone could answer a few questions for me, i have posted these on other forums but there were no replys, im 21 yrs old and not long back from backpacking and during my travels found a lot of ads for english teachers, i have looked into it and found many courses which i could take from online to intensive.

I am really interested in teaching english but can only afford the tefl online 60 hr diploma course. Would this be enough for me to gain employment abroad, i dont have a degree and noticed a lot of employers asking that you have a degree, my plan would be to sit the 60 hr diploma course and gain some experience teaching abroad and then look to build on the qualifications i have. Any feedback would be so much appreciated.

Thanks again

Gordon

Well, it will depend on which country you want to teach in. Certainly in China, Thailand and the Philippines you can get away without having a university degree. However, if you wanted to teach in Taiwan, Korea or Japan, then definitely a university degree is required.

Without having a university degree, then you definitely need to undertake a TESOL / TEFL course in order to gain any chance of being placed as an English teacher.

So where do you want to teach? That should be the first question you need to ask yourself. Try to choose a country that supports your future goals.

Some teachers head to Japan to teach and learn the language because they want to work in the hotel industry on their return. Hence, knowing some Japanese is beneficial in the hotel industry in Australia.

Now is the time to plan carefully for your future.

Let me know if you need more help.
