I don't have any idea where to start

I would love to go abroad and teach.

What do I need to do to get started? Where do I apply, what are some of the best places to go?

I really don't have my heart sent on any place in particular, but I don't want to go somewhere that I have to totally rough it. Please give me alot of advice.

Thanks in advance.

Get the ball rolling

So you are all confused where to start your teaching journey?
  1. I think you first need to assess your skills and experience. Do you have a background in teaching or education? If not, then try doing a TEFL course or weekend course or even a 10 week course. Look around for courses in your local area.
  2. The above step will also assist you in getting a good resume and application letter together. Ask your lecturers for assistance in this area.
  3. Job Search - Step 1 above can help again. Many TEFL course providers assist in job search. Where do you want to go? How much do you want to save? What cultures appeal to you?
  4. Buy your ticket and take the plunge!

I must say i am in this same position. My husband is going to be doing some medical work overseas for 8 weeks this summer and I was thinking about accompanying him and doing some short term teaching. i have a MS in Biology and as an undergrad my minor was English. I was wondering if I am even qualified at all?

Qualified to teach?

LadyM, you sure are qualified. Find out the area your husband is going to and then do a search on local school and contact them direct. Don't expect much of a salary though or even consider volunteering. Would be a great experience I think for you.

BBrian, thanks for the encouragement. I would want it to be a volunteer thing, this whole trip is about that anyway. We will be in Africa and we will know shortly just where. Some are going to Sudan and some Kenya and some a few other areas so I am not sure yet.

I have really lucked out as the coordinator of the medical project has found me a space to teach in the hospital where my husband will be working. I have purchased some materials and much to my delight, she was able to obtain materials from others who have gone before to various places. I am so excited!!

I wish I could be going over there with you. How many people get to experience something like that?

Good luck LAdyM and to GirlyGirl, Japan or Taiwan might be the go for you. Both are civilised far more than say, China, Vietnam, Laos or Cambodia. It depends on how much "roughing it" you can handle and how much you can go without!

It also depends on how much culture shock you think you'll be able to handle. All of these countries will entail going through some form of culture shock, but some will have less than others.
Good luck in your search!

Well summed up exported_kiwi!

It's really hard for others to recommend certain countries without knowing what type of person you are. Some can rough it whereas others need their luxuries. Asia would be a huge difference to the western world that many are used to. If you can't handle it, then consider teaching somewhere in Europe then.

No worries antonio, I'm here to put my 2 cents worth in.
Do you work in Vietnam perchance? Thinking of teaching there after this term ends.
Good luck to you Girlygirl, maybe Europe is best, but maybe Eastern Europe or Turkey, where you can have your comforts, but also rough it in a civilised way.
