Smile How to check if a school isn't a scam

I have recently graduated from college and looking for a job teaching internationally. How do I go about looking to make sure the school is legitmate. Also what are some of the key things you look at in a good school. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Melissia

Hello Melissia,

Good question.

I would recommend the following:
  • Ask to speak to a current teacher
  • Do a search in google for "School Name scam" or "School Name fraud"
  • Post your comments in this forum asking any teachers if they have any experience with the school.
The above should weed out a lot of the trouble schools for you.

Good luck.

If you are researching schools in Taiwan or China then www.buxiban.com is probably the best site to go to. The site contains extensive lists of schools, and these schools are afforded a rating according to the experiences of past teachers.

Your best bet is to contact teachers who have worked in the school before, or are currently doing so. You could check out the Teacher Mentors List for Taiwan or the Teacher Mentors List for China to find teachers that you can contact about specific schools.

If the school is not listed then follow the advice of Admin and do a search on google. Be sure to use quotes such as "ABC School" China etc.

All countries have their pros and cons. What sort of culture do you like? Or even what type of food do you like?

Korean food is hot and spicy. Japanese food is gentler to the pallate. Chinese food is oily but very delicious.

And weather? Hot and humid summers? Milder summers? There really is a lot of questions to ask oneself before deciding which country to teach in.

What about language? Will you learn the language? Do you want to do business with the language in the future?

Friends, money, savings etc... all need to be considered.

Sorry, I suppose you were looking for a 1 worded answer. But this is almost impossible I think. I'd make a great politician right? Never answer the questions. Hahahaha
