Qualifications required to teach English

Hello Amanda,

If you are talking about the subjects you need to study whilst in high-school, then there are no specific subjects that need to be undertaken.

It all depends on how serious you want to be about teaching. If you want to become a University Lecturer, then formal tertiary qualifications from a university in majoring Education is required. If you want to teach for 1 year abroad in China, Japan or anywhere, then a tertiary degree (in any subject is fine) would suffice. Obviously you can then take a few extra courses to boost your chances of finding work - eg. TEFL Course etc.

Generally no knowledge of the local language in the country you are teaching in is required. Some jobs do however require some conversation ability if teaching children.

Let me know if you need more help.

Good luck with your project.

Re: Hey! esl qulifications

I am not sure how it goes in other countries other than India. Here a person whose ambition is to become a teacher must undergo a Bachelors Degree in Education ( B.Ed.). It's a three year course and all the top universities in India offers it.

If you wanna be a lecturer in a college then you also need to do a Masters in Education (M.Ed.) and if your planning to come up to a level of a professor in a reputed university then you need to complete the Doctorate in that subject.
