Eyes in my Salad - TESL Food Experiences I noticed that there were lots of little eyes in my salad looking at me! I’m from the U.S. and have been a teacher in Japan for a while. I was at my favorite Yakitori spot eating a “salad” along with some seriously tasty BBQ chicken and beef. (and beer, goes without saying) In Japan, there are a lot of toppings of all shapes, sizes, and colors that might be put on food so I didn’t actually look that close at the lettuce with little white things in it, kind of mixed up with some other veggies. Then I noticed the eyes… lots of them, small and black, I focused at this point.. they were attached to really small fish… So basically I was eating a salad with tiny little silver colored raw fish mixed in into it. They were dead of course, and actually didn’t have any taste.. I pondered it for a moment, and promptly solved the problem by ordering another beer. That’s one of many interesting food stories I've had. What are some “unusual” (from your perspective) foods all of you have come across while teaching English in foreign countries? |
