Teaching students to become respected members of society
Instilling good morals and raising children to be respectable members of society is not just the responsibility of parents. A primary school teacher will spend more time with a child than their parents will throughout the school year.
Teachers are seen as a role model, not only by children but adult students too. Being in this role model position, we need to consider our actions carefully, and use this position to instill good morals amongst students.
Key responsibilities of teachers in the classroom are:
- Consistently compliment student's for desirable behaviours. Compliment for correct responses and achievement.
- Provide emphatic direction / behaviour modification for student empowerment behaviour.
- Provide negative reinforcement for undesirable behaviours.
Encouragement and complimenting students, develops a desire to succeed and excel in life. Nightingale likened a person without a goal to a ship without a destination or a crew. Neither has a chance of arriving.
Remember your
role as an English teacher is not just teaching English, but also instilling the correct values and morals into your students.
