Arrow Thomas Kane Fitzpatric resume

CV - Thomas Fitzpatrick

General. Available: 17 January 2006. Currently employed.

My current teaching position is in Eden, Yemen. The school (The American Language School)uses the Interchange and Passages books. I have taught at all except level 1 and am currently preparing students for the international TOEFL examination. (In Russia I used the Headway series of books and videos.)

I have been working as an analyst and programmer in the I.T industry for sixteen years. During this time I have taught management software concept. My experience of teaching English has been quite broad despite the relatively short time that I have spent teaching.

The other teachers, managers and students are constantly telling me that I am a good teacher. I seem to have a natural rapport with the students and I adapt to the culture of other countries quite quickly.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EMPLOYMENT HISTORY:

Worked as Analyst and programmer in I.T for 16 years.

Price Waterhouse and Cooper.
Ballsbridge Dublin
From 1980-1984
To begin with I was a trainee computer programmer and learn the techniques of structured programming and to follow strict standard procedure. At this company I had my first opportunity to
Teach and I did a lesson explaining basic computer concepts to non-I, T manager. The senior partner sent me a letter congratulating me on the quality of my teaching.

Cigna Worldwide Insurance
Crawley, Surrey, England
From 1985-1991
Cigna is one of the largest Insurance companies in the world. They insure everything you buy on an American Express card and also life, and travel insurance.
While working for them as a Senior Analyst programmer I gained experience teaching junior employees how to program computers. I also gave demonstrations of the system (MISTIC an international insurance system) to our customers (usually managers and even directors) and on one occasion I implemented the system in Copenhagen, Denmark training the staff in its use.
My analytical and programming skills were developed and I was responsible for most of the amendments to the system that was required by different countries in the world. This meant continual communication with countries such as Malaya, Spain, Denmark and the USA.
This office was the European centre while I worked there but the centre was moved to Brussels in Belgium and all the staff in our office were offered redundancy thus bringing my time there to an enforced end.

Freelance Consultant or Contractor
Location - various.
From 1992-2000
After my bad luck in being made redundant with Cigna I decided to go freelance which gave the opportunity to earn more money and also to travel.
i worked at various locations including Proton Motors (a Malaysian firm) in Avonmouth near Bristol in the west of England and for Standard Chartered Bank in the City of London. These and other roles gave me a great deal of confidence in dealing with other business people and an expansion of my business knowledge. Also, in the gaps between contracts I had the time and money to travel since I am not tried down by any family commitments.

Royal and Sun Alliance
College Green, Dublin 2, Ireland

i returned to my homeland in Ireland to take up this position because of the promise of training in the latest I.T. technologies and because the contract market was drying up after the famous year 2000 bug - which I helped fix in Jersey working for The Royal Bank of Canada on Main street St. Helier, Jersey for a six month contract.
At Sun Alliance I learned the latest internet software concepts, how to program in Java and how to design programs and systems using the Object Oriented Approach.

DECISION TO TEACH ENGLISH AS A FORIEGN LANUAGE
If you have read up to here you may be surprised that I then decided to take up teaching English
Especially as the pay is a fraction of what I was earning working in I.T. There is more than one reason for this decision. Firstly I have never been afraid to take risks and I wanted to expand my horizons and my skills. Also I have always been interested in teaching but lacked experience. Now I have taught business English both in Russia and Sudan and my students were pleasantly surprised by my in depth knowledge of so many aspects of business and, of course, I.T. I know it will take me few more years before I am a professional Business English teacher (and also teaching software concepts to non-native English speakers) but I also know that I have the ability and determined energy to achieve this ambition.
Meanwhile I am enjoying the challenge of travel, learning about other languages and cultures and improving my teaching skills.
