I've rarely heard accents in schools being a problem for students. I've worked with people from all over. Of course, none of them really had any strong accents. I think that might be the key. I know when I teach I try my best to keep my Jerseynese (yes, I made up a word for Jersey English) to a minimum. Although, sometimes it is fun to let out the accent and mess around with students. I've even taught some classes a bit of Pittsburghese... that was fun. In the long run, it is better for students to be exposed to a variety of accents so that they might have an easier time understanding people in the future.
