I think the theater near me last year had a deal for 45 or 50RMB for a matinee. My neighborhood was extremely wealthy, but that only accounted for a small portion of the local population. The majority in that district work in factories and make about 800-1000RMB/month. It's ridiculous to think that people would pay so much to go see a movie here in China when the DVDs are only 5RMB.

And for an economics lesson, I have realized that for the majority of life's needs here 2RMB has a similar buying power to US$1. That really does make movies and foreign products outrageously expensive.
